Whether a small defect can be detected, a reflective DataMatrix code read or a contour reliably measured is decided by the interplay of camera, optics, lighting, speed and the real test object.
A feasibility study helps answer these questions before larger investments are made.

An application test helps identify technical risks early and creates a sound basis for selecting the components you need.
When does a feasibility study make sense?
A test is particularly worthwhile with:
- very small defect features
- demanding measurement accuracy
- highly reflective surfaces
- transparent materials
- codes that are hard to read
- DPM codes on metal
- high object speeds
- difficult lighting conditions
- changing product variants
- complex surfaces
- an unknown lighting situation
- existing systems with unstable results
What do we look at?
Camera
What resolution is needed?
Which sensor size makes sense?
Mono or color?
Global shutter or rolling shutter?
What frame rate is needed?
Optics
Which field of view has to be covered?
Which focal length is required?
How large is the working distance?
Is a standard lens enough, or is a telecentric lens needed?
Lighting
Which lighting geometry produces the best contrast?
Depending on the application, we may consider:
- ring light
- bar light
- dark field
- coaxial lighting
- dome lighting
- backlight
- line lighting
- different wavelengths
- polarization
- optical filters
Movement
For moving objects we look at, among other things:
- object speed
- required exposure time
- motion blur
- required light output
- frame rate
- triggering
Code reading
For barcode, DataMatrix and QR applications we can check, for example:
- code type
- module size
- pixels per module
- field of view
- working distance
- movement
- lighting
- reflection
- DPM characteristics
A typical sequence
1. Discuss the application
You describe your task to us. Together we clarify the most important technical constraints.
2. Provide samples and data
Depending on the application, the following can help:
- test objects
- good and bad parts
- codes
- drawings
- photos
- existing image data
- technical documentation
3. Define the technical approach
We look at suitable camera, optics and lighting concepts.
4. Evaluate the results
We assess which technical approach looks suitable for the application and which limits have to be taken into account.
5. Select components
Based on the results, suitable components can be selected and procured.
Our goal is not the prettiest image
A test image can look impressive and still not represent a sound production solution.
That is why we do not only look at the image.
We look at the application.
An inspection feature has to be reliably detectable under the intended conditions - including at speed, with real part tolerances and under industrial conditions.
Less risk. Better product selection.
A good feasibility study can prevent:
- buying unnecessarily expensive cameras
- choosing unsuitable lighting
- the lens limiting the camera resolution
- the required speed not being achieved
- a code reader later becoming unstable because its resolution is too low
